The quality of the words I use and the way I use them speaks volumes about the product you can expect from me. Obviously it’s important for me - I’m a copywriter. But it’s no different for you. The way you write determines what people think about your product or service – whatever that is.

Finding a tone of voice for your brand

Remember those signs you used to see in no smoking compartments on British trains? “Please do not smoke”, they requested politely.  While, if you took a trip to Germany you’d be told “NICHT RAUCHAN!” The English version sounded diplomatic and cautious. The German sign was authoritative and outspoken. The two nationalities reflected distinct personalities in their tone of voice.  How do you go about finding that elusive tone that’s uniquely and categorically your brand?  And how do you express it in writing?

4 reasons tone of voice matters as much as content

What would happen if Gordon Ramsay and David Cameron were to swap tones when speaking to their audiences?  I fear Gordon's ratings would fall through the floor.  And it wouldn't please David's followers much either.  Written tone of voice is just as critical and can be trickier to get right – but it's important if you want to stop your audience going the way of Gordon's viewers.
